Many Words, Many Turds: Middle English Proverbial Wisdom and the Alleged Incontinence of Female Speech

In a passage from The Castle of Perseverance, the reprehensible Malus Angelus dismisses speech personified virtues who are attempting to lead mankind salvation: ‘Ther wymmen arn, many wordys. (…) Ther ges syttyn tordys’ (2649-51). As quotation illustrates, likening someone’s words turds is both an effective brush-off and colourful insult. This particular insult derives its force familiar anti-feminist trope voluble woman: like women, wicked angel implies, female personifications virtue talk too much, incontinence their presented in terms that scatological bestial. These lines transform virtues’ into logorrhea, object ridicule rather than reverence. But upon closer examination, this eminently quotable dramatic context which it situated also suggest new ways we might approach such examples discourse concerning women’s speech. essay examines how Angelus’s rely on destabilize proverbial sayings bodies
